The wineberries are amazing this year. The canes are loaded with big, juicy and sweet berries. Last year, they were a sad disappointment. The plants started good, but then it got really dry and stayed that way. The berries suffered because of this. I’m not sure I picked any real amount.

Do you remember last year? June was wet and very cool, then it got super hot and never rained for the rest of the summer. I’m being dramatic, of course, but that was it in a nutshell. In the end of June, it looked like we might be heading towards a drought, but the past week or so we’ve been getting lots of thunderstorms.
On Saturday, it rained all day, but the sun peeked out at around 6 o’clock, so we dashed to a favorite spot and picked a good amount. I served some fresh with pastry cream and biscuits for dessert on Sunday night. I also added strawberry sauce and fresh blueberries. I think I might make a syrup out of the rest of them. Wineberries have large seeds, so they don’t make the best jam, in my opinion, unless they are mixed with something. They go very well with blueberries.

ooooh, I love the wineberries. Just back from a walk and see that the ones around us are finally starting to emerge from their “shells” but not ready to pick yet. Can’t wait!
It’s so funny how things like this vary by days—I was in Kingston last week and they were ready, but ours weren’t. They took a few more days!
Three cheers for that rain!
Thank goodness!
